James W. Laflin

James W. Laflin, a life-long resident of Marietta, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015.

He was born on June 2, 1937 on Oakwood Ave, to John Vincent and Ruth Hutchison Laflin, who both preceded him in death.  His sister, Margaret R. McWhirter, and brother-in-law, Robert E. McWhirter, also preceded him in death.
 
Jim was a 1955 graduate of Marietta High School, where he was inducted into National Honor Society, and was active in chorus and band.  In 1960, he graduated from Marietta College, where he earned a B.S. in accounting.  After his college graduation, Jim worked for Century Electric as a bookkeeper.  He then went to work for Citizen's National Bank (later Central Trust) starting in the storeroom and through the years, was promoted to branch manager.  
 
Jim was a life-long member of Norwood United Methodist Church, where he sang both tenor and bass in the choir for nearly 60 years.  Jim's singing voice was a gift, both beautiful and effortless, and he truly loved sharing it.
 
He is survived by one brother, John Laflin (Mindy) of Broken Arrow, OK; a nephew, Steve McWhirter (Chyrese) of Marietta; and three nieces, Staci McWhirter (John Fogg) of Columbus, Sarah Kin of Tulsa, OK, and Jennifer Laflin of Overland Park, KS.  He is also survived by a great niece, Ava Kin, and a great nephew, John Kin, as well as many cousins and friends, who mourn his loss.
 
Jim's family would like to express sincere gratitude to his aide, Tracy Tidd, who not only helped him in the home but became a true friend.
 
A memorial service to honor Jim will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Norwood United Methodist Church, 23 Colgate Drive, Marietta, OH, led by Rev. Stacy Evans and Rev. Brian Weber.  Family will be at the church at 2:15 PM to greet friends.  Interment at Barlow Central Cemetery, State Rt. 550, Barlow, OH, following the service.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Norwood United Methodist Church, in Jim's name.
