Joan May

Joan May, 74, of Lowell, Ohio, went peacefully to be with our Lord on Thursday, March 20, 2014 after a short battle with cancer.  She was born in Washington, D. C., December 15, 1939, a daughter of Joseph and Lula Cookman Poe.  Joan served the Lord as a missionary in New Mexico to the Navajo Indians for 16 years until her marriage to Russell May in 1984.  They enjoyed 23 glorious years of marriage together before Russell’s death in 2007.  Joan has always been active in many church ministries including Junior Church, Choir, RU, and Seedline; however, her greatest passion was personal discipleship and teaching ladies Bible studies.   She was a member of Souls Harbor Baptist Church.  Joan loved her country, was patriotic and was a fierce supporter of the U.S. Military.   She was honored that so many members of her family served in the military and very proud of her 2 grandsons that are currently serving in the Army and Air Force.  Joan was a loving grandmother and was known as “Grandma Joan” to many adopted “grandchildren” that span several generations.  She will be greatly missed but we rejoice that she is now with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russell May and her brother Joseph Poe.

Joan is survived by 2 daughters and 1 son: Robin (Don) Yocum of Sapulpa, OK and Rachel (Steven) Haught of Pinellas Park, FL, J. Adam (Tara) Yates of Lowell; 2 stepsons and 1 step daughter:  April (Calvin) Moyers of Town Creek, AL, Mark (Donna) May of Newark, OH, Reuben (Carol) May of Lowell, 20 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday (Mar. 24) at 11:00 am at Souls Harbor Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Hughes officiating.  Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery in Lowell.  Friends may call at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home on Sunday after 2:00pm with family present 2-4 & 6-8.  Messages of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.Lankfordfh.com.
