He was born in the same home on May 30, 1927 the son of Ernest E. and Ada (McNary) Hanna. He had one brother James (Mary Evelyn) Hanna.

He missed his high school graduation ceremony to voluntarily be sworn into the Navy in May 1945.  Following his service he pursued his dream to work in the oil industry and to continue farming (5th generation).  In 1951, he went to work at Union Carbide which became part of Elkem Metals.  He retired as plant foreman in 1987.  After retirement, his focus on family, friends and farming gave him great joy.  He never knew a stranger.

On January 30, 1960 he married Norma Jean Muhlbach and had four children, Susan, Mark (Christine), Jean (Rick) Lantz and Jane (Mike) Skeen.  His grandchildren are Mason and Grant Hanna of Washington Court House, Paige Myer of Dublin and LeeAnn and Jonathon Skeen of Marietta along with Holly (Eric) Mednis of California.  In addition, he has two nieces Madeline (Perley) Hill of Belpre and Linda (Randy) Ward of Marietta.

John was a fifty year member of American Union Lodge #1 of the Royal Arch Masons.   He was also in Marietta Commandery No. 50, and Washington County Scottish Rite Club.  He was also a member of Marietta Shrine Club.  John assisted Troop 216 of the Boy Scouts of America for many years as well. He had a keen interest in his family ancestry, having visited Sorbie Castle in Scotland.
