Sandra Irene Matthews

Sandra Irene Matthews, 68, of Marietta, passed away at her home on Monday, June, 22, 2015.  She was born February 22, 1947, in Marietta a daughter of the late Charles “Gene” Lowe and Velma Green Lowe.  Sandra graduated from Marietta High School in 1965 and later attended Washington State Community College.

Sandra always enjoyed volunteering.  She was involved in many organizations including MMH, 4-H Extension and was a board member for Community Action and Washington County Farmers Mutual.  She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where she held many positions, taught Sunday School for many years and enjoyed singing in the choir.  Sandra was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling, especially to the Smokey Mountains where many wonderful family memories were made over the years.
 
She served 8 years as the Clerk for Washington County Commission before being elected 5 terms as Washington County’s first woman County Commissioner, retiring in January 2005.
 
On September 10, 1967, she married Michael Allen Matthews.  The have 2 daughters, Susan Michelle of Marietta and Melissa Ann (Russell) Brown of Graysville, OH.  She is also survived by her mother Velma Lowe of Marietta; granddaughter Isabella Brown and siblings Daniel (Janice) Lowe, Nancy (Steve) Halpren, Karen (Gary) Daggett, Joyce (Richard) Murphy, David (Barbara) Lowe, Angela (Tom) Ward, Doug (Mary Ellen) Lowe, brother and sister-in-law David and Patty Matthews as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
 
Preceding her in death were her father, her in-laws Gale and Mary Matthews and her grandparents.
 
Funeral services will be held on Thursday (June 25) at 1:00 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Bryan Weber officiating.  Interment will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.   Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8.   Messages of sympathy may be sent at www.Lankfordfh.com.

The family would like to thank Dr. Siva and the staff at the Strecker Cancer Center, Interim Health Care and Hospice and the many doctors and nurses that cared for her.
