George E. Slater

George Edward “Mope” Slater, 91, of Marietta, passed away on Wednesday evening, April 1, 2009, at Bradenton, Florida.

He was born in Marietta on March 24, 1918, the son of Clyde W. and Lucy Williamson Slater.  He graduated from Marietta High School where he was active in football and basketball.  He was a well-known softball pitcher in the area and later in life an avid golfer.  He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and retired from Union Carbide Metals after 30 years service.

He was married to Ruth Frances Reed who preceded him in death.  Surviving is his daughter Judith Lynn (Bob) Coil and a sister Lois Reed both of Marietta; 2 grandchildren, Robert and Stephanie Coil and 2 great grandchildren, Meredith and Adam Coil and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Reed Slater, a sister, Norma Jean Lemmon and a brother David H. Slater.

Funeral services will be held on Monday (April 6) at East Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum at 11:00 am.  Family will greet friends from 10:00 until 11:00.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to:  Hospice and Home Nursing, 210 S. Seventh Street, Marietta, OH 45750.  McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
