Sumner “Sam”A. Mercer
Sumner A. “Sam” Mercer, 94, of Marietta, passed away on Monday, July 12, 2010, at Marietta Center.
He was born on October 1, 1915, in Marietta to Charles and Inez Mercer. He had been employed at Brickwede Furniture Company, Union Carbide and was a custodian at Peoples Bank. Sam enjoyed raising cattle, coon hunting, mowing grass and flower gardening.
On June 16, 1947, Sam married Olive Hanes who survives with 1 daughter, Shirley Mercer, 1 stepdaughter, Charlotte Connolly and 1 stepson, Marvin (Shelby) Hanes; grandchildren: Mark (Dee) Connolly, Tim (Zoe) Connolly, Teresa (Fred) Stone, Sandra (Jim) Briesemister, Marvin Hanes, Jr., Pamela (Bob) Kirkland Debby Patterson, Teresa (Duane) Gallion, Susan (Radney) Whipkey, Theodora (Chuck) Hesson, Glen LeMaster, Hank Allender, Paul Sebring, Duane Sebring, Vernon Sebring, Faron Sebring, Debby Wright and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Betty Surrena, granddaughter Elizabeth Allender, grandson Jessie Surrena, son Charles Mercer, stepdaughter Shirley Binegar Nameth, brother Elmer Mercer, and sister Irene Conley.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday (July 15th) at 1:00 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Gale Lauderman officiating. Burial will be in Brabham Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday after 2:00 pm with family present from 2-4 and 6-8.
