Kim Sanford McGrew

Portrait of Kim Sanford McGrew

Kim Sanford McGrew of Marietta OH passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2024. She was born in Wilmington DE in 1933 and lived in Hanford WA and Charleston WV before moving to Marietta in 1969. Kim was a graduate of the University of Kentucky where she majored in journalism, and she later obtained a Masters of Liberal Learning in Library Science from Marietta College. She worked for many years at Campus Martius Museum, where she led tours, helped people with their genealogy and generally kept the place running smoothly.

Kim was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Douglass McGrew. She is survived by her sister Julie Moore of Portland OR and by her cousin April Mapes of Chagrin Falls OH. She has four surviving children: Sarah, Virginia, Robert (Jennifer) and Duncan (Nancy). She is the grandmother to Clinton, Mohammed, Saratu, Hamza, John, Matthew, Grant and Owen, as well as six great grandchildren. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, saying she would go to hell if her children would be there.

A long-time sports fan, Kim loved to watch the UK Wildcats on TV. She played tennis well into her 80s and enjoyed bicycling on several European vacations. In addition to family, she loved her pets. You could often see her walking one of her many dogs in the Devola neighborhood. She also enjoyed her bridge group, bird watching, Learning in Retirement classes and Reading Club.

Kim was a talented artist. She hooked rugs which are stunning in their beauty and craftsmanship. She also enjoyed other crafts such as knitting and cross stitch. She played the piano beautifully.

Kim supported the Marietta community in many ways. She was member of the Board of Trustees of Marietta Memorial Hospital and served as an advisor to the local Chi Omega chapter at Marietta College. She also belonged to the PEO, which helps young women obtain an education.

Kim will be held closely in the hearts of those she loved and who love her – a woman of value always adds value. Kim was one of a kind and will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Her strength and love live on in all who knew her.

Kim will be buried in Mound Cemetery alongside her late husband. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. A private graveside service is planned for later this spring with assistance from McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home. The family asks that contributions be made to the John D and Kim S McGrew Honorary Scholarship at Marietta College in lieu of cards and flowers. The link to make donations is www.marietta.edu/give (click other and then McGrew scholarship) or can be mailed to the Advancement Office at 215 5th St. Marietta OH 45750.
