  • Donna Lou Frazier Farley

    Donna Lou Frazier Farley, 88, of Marietta passed away at 9:47 pm, Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born in Marietta on January 31, 1935 to Ralph Frazier and Eva Irene Middleswartz Sprague.
    Donna graduated from Marietta High School and worked for the Marietta Police Department under her father-in-law Chief Thomas B. Sprague. She was later employed as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell retiring after many years.

    Carl L. Phillips, 78, of Williamstown passed away at his home at 3:44 am, Tuesday, August 29, 2023.
    He was born on March 10, 1945, in Summit, WV, a son of Homer and Fay Pugh Phillips.
    Carl was a member of the U. S. Army Reserves. He had been employed by Fenton Art Glass and was a Methodist by faith.

    Janice S. Gutberlet, 83, of Marietta passed away at 9:35 pm, Monday, August 28, 2023 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born May 15, 1940, in Marietta a daughter of Merle L. Heslop and Jessie I. Cronin Heslop.
    Janice has been employed at Marietta College in the Housekeeping Department and was a member of The Evergreen Bible Church.

    Leonard Leroy Waters, 85, passed away at 5.55 am on August 17, 2023 at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on June 19, 1938 in Marietta a son of the late Raymond Waters and Elsie Scarberry Waters. He was a graduate of Marietta High School, Class of 1957 and had served in the U. S Army. He loved his job in the Grocery and Motel Management and enjoyed NASCAR and Football.

  • Matthew L. “Matt” Simmons

    Matthew L. Simmons, 60, of Reno (Marietta) passed away at his home Sunday, August 13, 2023. He was born in Marietta on March 24, 1963 a son of late Lewis and Mary Seevers Simmons.
    Matt was a graduate of Marietta High School and had served Washington County as a Deputy Sheriff for over 30 years. In his retirement he enjoyed gardening, making hot pepper dust, taking walks with his dog, riding his 4-wheeler, working on his tractor and especially playing with his grandson. Matt never met a stranger.

  • Sarah Mae Hoover Buchert

    Sarah Mae (Hoover) Buchert, 96, organist at Christ United Methodist Church from 1949 to 2016, passed away peacefully in her beloved apartment at The Pines of Glenwood in Marietta, OH, on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.
    She was born on December 1, 1926, to The Rev. Dr. Leonard H. and Esther W. Hoover in McKeesport, PA. She graduated from Connellsville (PA) High School on D-Day, 1944, and then went onto Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH, graduating in 1948. Sarah earned a Bachelor of Music in music education, sacred music, and organ; was honored with membership in Mu Phi Epsilon music honorary; and was an alum of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. After coming to Marietta, she was an elementary vocal music teacher at several Washington County schools for 39 years and was also an in-home organ and piano teacher through the years. In 1965 she founded and began directing the Cathedral Handbell Choir at Christ Church in addition to her organ worship leadership. For 60 years, Sarah and Roger resided at 211 Walnut Drive in Devola where they raised Jeff.
    In 2003, Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Roger D. Buchert of Marietta, whom she met at OWU and married at First (Christ United) Methodist Church in Marietta on June 19, 1949. Her father co-officiated the ceremony. Also preceding her in death were her parents and brother, Rev. Charles (Tina) Hoover, of California.
