Beryl Cole

Beryl Cole passed away peacefully on July19th, 2018 at the age of 91 at the home of her son Jeff Cole and wife Lili where she had lived for the past seven years. She lived in relatively good health and remained alert and active until the final few days of her life. Beryl was supported in this life by her strong religious beliefs and by the love of her family and friends and her puppy Roscoe.
Beryl was born on February 4th, 1927 in Marietta Ohio to her parents Floyd Edwin Jackson and her mother Zelda Leota Pickens Jackson. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Jefferson Jackson and Cynthia Viola Mahoney Jackson. Her maternal grandparents were George Washing Pickens and Maggie Hableib Pickens.
Beryl graduated from Marietta High School in 1945 and from Marietta College in 1949. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and president of Chi Omega Sorority her Senior year. She graduated Cum Laude and an active member of the debate team.
She married John Fulton Cole on July 11th of 1948 and produced three children: Jeffrey Floyd Cole (1951) and her twins Paula Beth and Pamela Jean Cole (1953). Jeff is Married to Lili Sun and they live in Athens, Ohio, Paula is married to Kenneth Hackathorn who live in Salmon Idaho and Pam, who passed in January of 2017, is survived by her husband Terry Handschumacher and they lived in Bridgeport, WVA. She has three grand children, Nicholas Grimes, Angela Handschumacher Bush and Jon Handschumacher and four great grand children, Landry, Paisley and Ellie Handschumacher and John Camden (Cam) Bush.
In 1959 Beryl and John moved to New Matamoras, Ohio. Her wonderful husband John died in 1985. In 2000 Beryl moved back to Marietta and lived on Harmer Hill until moving to Athens, Ohio in 2012 to live with her son Jeff and his wife Lili.
Beryl lived and active life: besides raising her children and caring for her home she participated in teaching 4-H, teaching Sunday school from the age of 16 years, teaching school for a number of years at Matamoras Elementary School and tutoring in her home. She was an active gardener. Beryl was an active member of the Matamoras Methodist church and when she returned to Marietta she moved her membership to the Norwood Methodist Church.
In her later years, books, magazines, and newspapers were her constant companions as was her puppy Roscoe who guarded her and took daily naps beside her. She was an active bird watcher and a lover of nature and animals. She lived happy and content and full of love which she shared until her passing.
She is loved and greatly missed by her family and friends. A celebration of life service is planned for early Autumn.
