Dean E. Morgenstern
Another veteran has died…Dean E. Morgenstern, 87, of Marietta, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born on March 5, 1924, in Washington County, a son of Clarence and Bessie Riemenschneider Morgenstern. He graduated from Salem Liberty High School in 1942. During World War II, he served as a medic in the 87th Infantry and under General Patton during the Battle of the Bulge. He then returned to Marietta College where he completed his degree in 1948. Dean was a director for Borg Warner Chemicals that later became G.E., retiring in 1992. He served on the O”Neill Senior Center Board, United Way Board and was Chairman of SCORE. He was a former member of Marietta City Council, volunteered for several organizations and was a member of Gilman United Methodist Church where he held various offices.
On June 23, 1946, he married Mabel Hendershot who survives with 3 daughters: Pam (John) Grimes of Marietta, Cheryl (Charlie) Slavik of Indianapolis, Joyce (Greg Birtsch) Cravens-Birtsch of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren: Tommy (Marsha) Carvens, Teddy (Liz) Cravens, Stephanie (Matt) Slavik-Jones, Nate Slavik, Stuart Grimes, Ashleigh Birtsch, Hunter Birtsch. He is also survived by great grandchildren: Mae and Henry Cravens, Ella and Eli Jones, and sister-in-law Marge Morgenstern.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step grandson, Matthew Grimes, brother Delmer Morgenstern, sister Leora Hendershot.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday (May 19) at 11:00 am at Gilman United Methodist Church with Reverend Diann O’Bryant officiating with burial following in Mound Cemetery with full military honors. Friends may call on Wednesday at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home after 2:00pm with family present from 2-4 and 6-8.
