Elijah (Everett) Schmidt

On Friday, March 7, 2014 Elijah (Everett) Schmidt at ninety years of age, left his body to be present with his Lord. He was with his wife Wanda and their daughter Nancy at their home in Stanleyville, Ohio when he graduated to heaven.

Everett was born in White Cottage, Ohio on May 6, 1923, the youngest child of Wilhelm Howard and Anna Lucinda Haught Schmidt. When he was a child, the family moved to the home his grandfather built on Fifteen-Mile Creek, Marietta, OH. He attended a one-room school on Moss Run, then joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in WWII. He met the love of his life on the bus ride home and married her four months later. He was a hard worker and retired from the Marietta Cyanamid plant after thirty-five years of employment.   Everett was a member of the Marietta Church of God. He became unable to attend services due to health issues, but enjoyed frequent visits from Pastor John Coyle and wife Tiffany.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing, boating, flying and reading. He loved his family and was always quick to help them in any way he could. His last days on earth were filled with telling his wife and children how much he loved them and how grateful to God he was for all his blessings.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Clarence, brothers George and Floyd Schmidt and one sister, Sarah Maher.

He is survived by his beloved wife Wanda Dudley Schmidt, whom he married on June 29,1946, children, Shirley (Bob) Hoffman, Nancy Beck, Connie (Larry) Matthews, Marie (Joe) Gerken, and Jerry (Heather) Schmidt, eleven grandchildren, Kandy Chandler, Brian, Nathan, and Michael Cooper, Bob and Adam Enochs, Seth Matthews, Jody Briggs, Kelly Kent, Andrew and Noah Schmidt, thirteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Everett will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but as believers in Jesus Christ the separation will be temporary. Until that day, fond memories of times shared and tales told will warm the heart and bring smiles to the faces of those awaiting the reunion.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday (Mar. 11) at 1:00 pm at the Church of God, Colegate Drive, Marietta with Pastor John Coyle officiating.  Burial will be at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.  Friends may call at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home on Monday after 2:00 pm with family present from 2-4 & 6-8.  Messages of sympathy may be sent at www.Lankfordfh.com.
