Elizabeth Stanton Cottle
Elizabeth Stanton Cottle, 103, of Marietta passed away on Sunday (Dec. 18, 2011). She was born Feb. 19, 1908, in Washington, D.C., daughter of Timothy William Stanton and Grace Mabel (Patten) Stanton. Elizabeth was the wife to the late Delmer Leroy Cottle (1902-1973).
Elizabeth Stanton graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore with a Phi Beta Kappa Key in 1928. She received an M.S. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1930, where she majored in zoology and genetics and was elected to Sigma Xi, science honorary.
Married Aug. 16, 1930, Roy and Elizabeth moved to Highland Park, N.J., where Roy taught organic chemistry at Rutgers University in nearby New Brunswick. They lived in Highland Park for 42 years before moving to Roy's hometown of Marietta, after his retirement from Esso Research and Engineering Co.
In Marietta, Elizabeth joined First Congregational United Church of Christ where she is the oldest member.
She has been a member of American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.) for more than 50 years. In 1995 the Marietta Chapter named an endowed fellowship in her honor to support advanced study for women.
Elizabeth is a lifetime member of the Ohio Historical Society and of the Washington County Historical Society. She also belongs to the Ohio Genealogical Society and to its Washington chapter. This local chapter presented her with a Genealogical Treasure certificate to honor her lifetime achievement in genealogy on Feb. 26, 2005, proclaimed by Marietta Mayor Michael Mullen as Elizabeth Cottle day.
She joined the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) in 1972 and held several offices including Registrar for nine years in the Marietta branch.
With many contacts and a thriving correspondence, she was able to write more than 35 articles on various families. Most of these appeared in The Tallow Light, journal of the Washington County Historical Society.
With Bernice Graham, she indexed and compiled books of Washington County Marriages, Wills and Estates.
Elizabeth was also parent and homemaker for many years and is survived by three children: Joanne Cottle Storch of York Springs, Pa.; Diana Cottle Gleasner and husband G William (Bill) Gleasner of Denver, N.C.; and Edward Stanton Cottle and wife Susan of Pataskala, Ohio; as well as four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Grace Stanton Fansher of Boulder, Colo.; sister, Josephine Stanton Edwards of Silver Spring, Md.; also son-in-law, John Lewis Storch; grandson, William Jeffrey Storch; sister-in-law, Louise Cottle Walter and husband Ralph of New Jersey, sister-in-law, Helen Cottle McClure and husband C.I.
In lieu of flowers, donations to First Congregational Church of Marietta or to the donor's favorite charity would be appreciated.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday (Dec. 23) at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church with Reverend Linda Steelman officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
