Emmett Moore, Sr.
Emmett Moore, Sr., 94, of Marietta passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born in Monroe County to the late Frieda Jones Moore Erb and the late Joseph Moore. He was primarily raised by his maternal grandmother and grandfather, the late Hattie Jones and Harvey Jones.
He worked in the dairy industry in Alliance until he went into the Army. He was trained in the armored tank division in Texas maintaining and handling the weapons. He sustained the first of his army related wounds. Each day the crew was charged with unloading and putting firearms away for the day. One of the soldiers failed to do this. The gun fell and discharged hitting Emmett in both calves. Recovering from his wound he missed being deployed with the tank division. He was deployed to France in the infantry and was involved in the push for the Rhine. It was at this time that he was wounded a second time. His unit was being fired upon and the person next to him was down. Emmett turned to help his comrade and was shot through the pack and wounded in the back. When he returned home in 1946, he was employed by the River Gas Co. He retired in 1979 after 34 years. He is a member of the American Legion and the Moose and the Marietta Beagle Club.
On March 8, 1943, he married Viola Edith Erb, who preceded him in death on June 29, 2005, after 50 years of marriage. He built two homes and raised a family. He loved gardening bowling and running beagle dogs at the club.
Surviving are Emmett Jr. (Sunny) and Gracie Moore with whom he made his home since 2006, Glenn and Barbara Moore, Vaughn and Donna Moore of Marietta and Gayla and Larry Schmidt of Waco, Kentucky; grandchildren: Christopher Moore, Vincent Moore and fiancé Jamie Twyman of Parkersburg, Suzette Moore Silk (Paul) of Euclid, Ohio, Jerrard Moore (Jennifer) of Clermont, Florida, Jason Moore (Beth-Ann) of Marietta, Kirsten and Zackary Schmidt of Waco, Kentucky; great grandchildren: Tyler C. Moore, Kyle and Ryan Silk, Darin and Rosemarie Moore, Lucas and Jackson Moore, and children of Jamie Twyman, Kyle and Cody Taylor and Addison Twyman of Parkersburg. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and special friends, including John and Aulene Rollison, Larry and Diane Brown, Kenny Casto and Jane Kesterson and former daughter-in-law Tammy Moore.
Preceding him in addition to his wife were his mother Freida Jones Moore Erb, his father Joseph Moore, a sister Bessie and her son Harold and an infant brother Leslie. Also an infant son Joseph and an infant daughter Gleda, his stepfather Philip Erb, granddaughter Sarah E. Moore and an infant granddaughter. Also preceding him was a special niece and her husband Evalina Allen Barth and Robert Barth, and sister-in-law Florence Erb Allen, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday (Oct. 22) at the McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with burial following in Valley Cemetery with full military services. Visitation at the funeral home will be Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8. Messages of sympathy may be sent at www.Lankfordfh.com.
