Phyllis Wood Noland
Phyllis Wood Noland, 91, of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of Marietta, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at The Lodge in Loveland.
She was born August 27, 1919 at Marietta, a daughter of Lulu Oesterle Wood and Walter W. Wood. Phyllis had attended Marietta city schools, graduating from high school in 1937, and attended Marietta College, graduating in 1941 where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Intaglio Women’s Honorary Society and served as college newspaper columnist and on yearbook staff. She worked for Marietta College and then IBM in Erie, Pennsylvania until marriage to Harley G. Noland in 1944. With her family, she lived in: Banana River, FL; Erie, PA; New Matamoras, OH; Charleston, WV; Summerville & Pluckemin, NJ; Kinston, NC; and Yarmouth, MA.
Phyllis served as President, American Field Service international student exchange program in Charleston, West Virginia, was a member of Charleston Women’s Club and was active as a volunteer in West Virginia elementary school libraries. She attended the West Virginia University graduate school to obtain a Masters in Library Science, and was a librarian at the Madison, NJ campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University.
She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Yarmouth, Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts where she was honored as Churchwoman of the Year.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harley G. Noland, two sons, Lloyd Fredrick Noland and Charles Wood Noland, and four grandchildren: John Christopher, James Allen, Christina Louise and Charles Fredrick. Phyllis’ sister, Juanita Wood Warmen, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be at McClure- Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home on Saturday, October 30th from 11am to 2pm with funeral service at the funeral home at 2pm following visitation. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Park. The family requests any donations be made in the name of Phyllis Wood Noland either to Marietta College or The First Congregational Church of Marietta.
