Robert M. “Bob” Coil

Portrait of Robert M. “Bob” Coil

Robert M. “Bob” Coil, 81, passed away early Sunday morning September 8, 2024, due to complications from a fall on August 5.
He was a member of the Marietta High School class of 1961 and was proud to be a 1959 state cross country meet qualifier for legendary Tiger track coach Bob Annasenz. He attended Ohio University, and then served in the US Army in the AG corps from 1962-1964. After two weeks of “peeling potatoes” in Stuttgart, Germany, he received a TDY to Geneva, Switzerland where he was immediately trained in typing and shorthand and assigned to Army Staff HQ. Near the end of his two years in Geneva, he was loaned out to be an Army stenographer to the State Department during the 1964 Geneva Nuclear Disarmament talks. It depended on the day as to whether he was prouder of that service or running a 4:47 mile in combat boots during his basic training.
After the Army he had a stint as a part owner of an IL motel. Then after a short stint selling electrical cable and wiring, he returned to Marietta in 1972 to stay. He held a number of positions including salesman, co-owner, sales manager, and owner for several local companies involved in building concrete storage silos including: Marietta Concrete, Marietta Tektonics, First Colony Corporation, and American Marietta. Bob was always quick to give credit to his partners, his mentors, and the many wonderful people he worked with for the success of those companies. He started his last business in 2000, American Lubricants and Chemicals which operated until recently. ALC was a reseller and distributor of lube oils and chemicals.
He also enjoyed in his earlier years being a member of Home Builders and participating in Junior Achievement. Other hobbies included private aviation and cars. He was a 32o Mason. He was a member of the 6th and Washington Church of Christ. He is survived by the love of his life, Judy (Slater) Coil married 46 years, a daughter Stephanie Coil of Marietta, a son Robert F. Coil (Nicole) of Marietta and grandchildren, Meredith and Adam Coil. He is also survived by his favorite nephew, John Coil (Heather) of Tampa, Florida, and their two children Jagger and Hadley Coil.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold, and Zelma Coil of Marietta; in-laws George and Ruth Slater of Marietta; brother Gary Coil of Sarasota, Florida, and brother-in-law Steve Slater.
He would like to be remembered as a businessperson and a proud member of the Class of 1961. His family will remember him for his generous heart, love of storytelling, and that he never met a stranger, but made friends everywhere he went. Some of the last friends he met were those who cared for him at Marietta Memorial Hospital. The family is grateful to Dr. Ghodsi and the nurses who lovingly cared for him on the 4th Floor ICU and Step-Down.
Friends may call at the McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home on Thursday, September 12 from 5-8pm. There will be a Masonic service Thursday, at the end of visitation. There will be visitation on September 13 one hour prior to the funeral from 12-1:00PM. The funeral will follow at 1pm on Friday at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral home.
