Walter Edward “Ed” Vermaaten

He was born January 13, 1945, in Marietta to the late Walter E. Vermaaten, Sr. and Nora K. O'Linn of Marietta.
He was a 1963 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He served 4-1/2 years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Little Rock. He received a Fire Science Degree from Parkersburg Community College. Ed retired as captain from the Marietta Fire Department with 25-1/2 years of service. He and his wife operated a casket business for 17 years. After retiring from the fire department he drove school bus for the Marietta City Schools for 16 years and also worked for the Board of Elections. He was a volunteer driver for the Washington County Veteran’s Office. Ed was a member of the American Legion Post 64, VFW Post 1212, Knights of Columbus, Marietta Firefighters IAFF Local 442, and the Washington County Democratic party. He is a member of the Marietta Building Enforcement Board and a commissioner with the Marietta Civil Service Commission. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and his grandchildren whom he dearly loved.
He is survived by his wife Lynn Schilling Vermaaten, two sons Doug (Suzanne) Vermaaten of Newark, OH, Ben (Jodibeth) Vermaaten of Grove City, OH. Four grandchildren Nicholas, Colin, Cale and Piper Vermaaten. His siblings Patrick Vermaaten and friend (Madelon) of Oakland,CA, Paul (Roberta) Vermaaten of Bowling Green, Margaret Brooks of Marysville, Susie (Jim) VanSkoy of Marengo, OH, Mary Ellen (Fred) Cook of Chelle, IN, Kathy (Larry) Shively of Marietta, OH, Martha (Rick) Cashman of Westerville, OH and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.
According to his wishes, his body was donated to Ohio University for medical research. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday (Feb. 11) at 10:00 am at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption. Family will greet friends at the church one hour before the service.
