William Boyd Hickman

William Boyd Hickman, 91, of Marietta, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Harmar Place.  

He was born in Grantsville, WV, on March 26, 1921.  He is the son of William H. and Daisy Kersey Hickman.  He lived in Grantsville until 1937 when the family moved to Spencer, WV.  He is a graduate of Spencer High School class of 1940.  After graduation he served in the armed services as the T/Sgt. in the 501st Aircraft Warning Battalion of the Third Air Force.  On March 12, 1943, he was married to Gladene (Midge) Deitrich who was deceased in March, 2001.  His family moved to Marietta in 1944 where he established the Bill Hickman Insurance Agency.  He served Nationwide Insurance Companies for 40 years until his retirement.  Following retirement he became a volunteer insurance consultant for the Marietta Memorial Hospital’s 55+  outreach program and Ohio Insurance Department OSHIIP program.  He was also a volunteer for the AARP tax assistant program for the elderly at the O’Neill Center and the tourist trolley.
 
He is survived by his daughters: Nancy Short and her husband James, Ruth Stockwell and her husband William and Patricia Pierce and husband James W.  Grandchildren are:  Jamie Rubin and husband Bruce and William Short both of Columbus, Ami Smith and her husband Bryan of Charlottesville, VA, Amanda Pritt and husband Steve of Charleston, WV, Ashley Dillow and husband Mark of Martinsburg, WV, and James W. Pierce IV and wife Christine of Jackson, MS, 14 great grandchildren and his sister Evelyn Martin and husband Jack of Pineville WV.   He was preceded in death by Midge, his wife of over 50 years.
 
He was a member of the Marietta First Baptist Church since 1945 where he held offices in the Board of Deacons and as Sunday School Superintendent.  He taught Sunday school for 35 years.
 
Funeral services will be held on Monday (July 16) at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church with visitation on Sunday after 2:00 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 and at the church one hour before the service.  Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.  Messages of sympathy may be sent at wwwmslfuneralhome.com.
 
In lieu of flowers, he has requested that donations be made to the Caring Touch program of the First Baptist Church.
