Outer Burial Containers
Outer burial containers are specially designed receptacles that caskets are placed in for ground burial. They are not required by law, however many cemeteries require their use. The main function of a outer burial container is to support the weight of the ground surrounding the grave and help the ground from settling over time. Outer burial containers are most commonly made of reinforced-concrete or metal.
A burial vault is a type outer burial container that adds some protection for the casket that has been placed inside. This protection typically comes from using a sealant on the lid or base of the vault. It can also include adding an extra inner layer or layers of plastic and metal.
