Galen Aaron Porter

Galen Aaron Porter, 94, a resident of Glenwood since 2007,  died on Saturday June 5, 2010.

Born in Burnettsville, Indiana on October 19, 1915. In high school, his family moved to Gary, Indiana.  While in high school, he submitted mechanical drawings to Purdue for competitions, and won several prizes.  He graduated from Gary High School in 1933, with a city wide prize for chemistry.

He received a Rector Scholarship to DePauw University, from which he graduated in 1937.  He graduated from Purdue University in 1939 with a master of science in chemistry. He joined Union Carbide Metals in Niagara Falls, NY as a research chemist. During World War II, he worked on the Manhattan Project. In the late 1950s, he was promoted to the position of Chief Chemist of Union Carbide Metals. He published several papers on various analytical methods on metals in numerous scientific journals, and was included in the directory American Men and Women of Science, 12th ed., 1973.

He and his wife enjoyed international travel. He played his last game of  golf at the age of 91.

He is predeceased by wife Irene Neal Porter, and siblings Beatrice Davis, Keith Porter, and Helen Terry, and his parents.  He is survived by his children Randall Porter and Gail (Ann) Bardhan, grandsons Matthew Porter, Jay Bardhan and Neil Bardhan, and extended family members Jennifer Trap and Jessi Potter.

There will be no services.  McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
