Dwight E. Wittekind

Dwight E. Wittekind “Pappy” of Marietta went home to be with the lord on his 79th birthday, Wednesday September 9, 2009 at Marietta Care Rehabilitation and Center. He was born in Bartlett, OH to Ida M. and Lawrence A. Wittekind.  He was the devoted husband for 59 years to his wife Dorothy, who survives him. They were married June 24, 1950. 

He was a loving father to his daughter Eve Szabo (Ted) of Marietta, son Mark Wittekind (Beth) of St. Augustine, FL.  One son Brett Wittekind preceded him in death in 1988. His parents also preceded him in death. He was a beloved “Pappy” to his grandchildren Stephanie Neonakis (Nick) and Jennifer Szabo of Shaker Heights, OH, Adam Wittekind (Carrie) and Julie Wittekind of Nashville, TN and Russ (Brandy) of Olathe, KS and had a special place in his heart for great granddaughter Megan Neonakis of Shaker Heights, OH.  Other great grandchildren include Max and Alex Neonakis of Shaker Heights, OH, Maury, Mada, and Drew Wittekind of Nashville, TN, and Colton Wittekind of Olathe, KS.  Surviving siblings are brothers Delbert (Helen) of Fleming, Donald (Arlene) of Marietta, and sisters Karen Strahler of Marietta, Thelma West (Cletis) of Marietta, and Lodi Dunn of Marietta.  Many nieces and nephews also survive him.

He was very active in his sons’ Little League Baseball programs.  He was a former volunteer in the Oak Grove Fire Department and an Emergency Squad EMT. He retired from the DuPont department of engineering after a career of dedicated service.

A memorial service will be held 2 pm, Sunday September 13, at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Minear. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter, Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Office, 1218 Market Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101.
