Charles “Bus” G. Nicholas, Sr.

Charles G. Nicholas, Sr., 89, of Lancaster St., Marietta, OH, departed this life Jan. 2nd, 2009 at Marietta Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.

Charles was born Aug. 19, 1919 in Herminie, PA, to Myrta (McGrew) Nicholas and Milo P. Nicholas. Upon the early death of his father, the family relocated back to a small farm in Bartlett, Ohio, at age 3 where he was raised.

He entered the Regular Army in 1944 and served in various European Theaters in WWII as the Army Medical Core Tech. At the conclusion of WWII he was transferred to Korea and served one tour and returned to duty at Fort Knox, KY and was Honorably Discharged as Sergeant of Medical Corps.

He married Daisy B. Burnell, Jan. 12, 1946, and upon completion of military service, returned to farming in the Bartlett, OH area. During this time he spent several years in the V.A. Hospitals, being treated for WWII wounds. He then worked as a foundry pattern maker at Millers Foundry in Dayton, OH, Marietta Memorial Hospital Maintenance Staff and retired from Marietta College, Physical Plant.

Charles was a Life Member of American Legion Post 64.

He was an avid gardener, loved to hunt, did all of his own carpentry and mechanical work for many of his friends and neighbors.

Surviving are sons: Charles G. Nicholas, Jr. (Lucille) of Marietta, Thomas G. Nicholas (Christy) of Tunnel, daughters: Evelyn M. Wilson and special friend Bill Chamberlain, Anna M. Meaner of Marietta and Daisy B. Killian (Jerry) of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, 12 grandchildren: Jeffrey A. Wilson, Michelle R. Gossett, Heather Y. Myers, Steven L. Felter, Ericka B. Schneider, Jonquil B. Tucker, Marley D. Nicholas, Heath T. Nicholas, Caleb R. Nicholas, Melissa K. Pritchard, Lisa A. Nicholas, Charles G. Nicholas, III, 16 great-grandchildren:  Michael A. and Jason M. Pritchard, Alisha L., Shani A., and William R. Todd, Alexis N. and Josie N. Nicholas, Casey M. and Danielle R. Gossett, Derek A. Maas, Alexandra E. Wilson, Breanna M. Wilson, Michael Kingsolver, Madison O. Felter, Olivia L. and Mattie M. Schneider, Julia B. Tucker and 3 sisters-in-law:  Evelyn Ghormley of Springfield, OH, Margaret Nicholas of Marietta, OH, and Betty Mihalopoulos of Roanoke, VA and several special nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, wife Daisy, sisters, Annabelle Butcher, Mary Waite, brothers, William, George, James, Andrew Nicholas and grandson, Daniel M. Rhodes.

Funeral services will be held 10:00am on Wednesday, Jan. 7th, 2009 at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Frary officiating. Friends may call from 2:00pm Tuesday, Jan. 6th, 2009 until 8:00pm. Interment will be at Bartlett Cemetery, Bartlett, Oh with full Military Honors by Honor Guard Squads of American Legion Post 64 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 5108.
