Elvin Gray Tenney
Elvin Gray Tenney, age 79, of Marietta, Ohio died Thursday, October 11, 2012. He was born October 14, 1932 in Lantz, WV. On July 15, 1956 he married Leverne Corathers Tenney.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons, James Gray, Mark Allen and David Brian Tenney (Stephanie); one daughter, Barbara Tenney Dils (Scott); eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers Earl Tenney and Joseph Tenney; and sisters Dora Brown, Oleta Watts and Sue Wamsley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Grace Potts Tenney; brothers Eldon Ray Tenney and James Lloyd Tenney; and two sisters Thelma Lucille Tenney and Nelda Ann Lantz.
Elvin was a 1950 graduate of Buckhannon Upshur High School, West Virginia, and served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1956. Following his discharge as a Staff Sergeant he graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1959 with a BS in Business.
In 1960 Elvin began his career in public accounting in Marietta and became a partner in Robinson, Caltrider & Tenney, CPAs. In the mid-1980s he served as an investor and Chief Financial Officer for a group of local companies.
In 1990 founded his own CPA firm, continued today by his son, David as Tenney & Associates, CPA’s. He remained active in the firm and worked daily on accounts and projects. In honor of his fifty years of accounting and community service Elvin was honored by Mayor Michael Mullen and the City of Marietta by proclamation, December 16, 2010, as Elvin Tenney Day.
Elvin was an active member of the Christ United Methodist Church and served on several boards and committees. His participation in area civic organizations included the Marietta Kiwanis Club for sixty-four years, Masonic Lodge #1, O’Neill Senior Center, United Way, Marietta Shrine Club, Hale Trust Committee, Marietta Advertising Club, Marietta Memorial Health Foundation, Marietta Jaycees, Muskingum River Navy, and the Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed by several Marietta City mayors to serve on numerous committees and commissions.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 15 at 11:00 at Christ United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, October 14 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford
