Garry Earl Styer
Garry Earl Styer, 62, gave up the adventures of this life for his mansion in glory on January 31, 2019, at Marietta Memorial Hospital from complications from pancreatitis. He was born February 17, 1956, the fourth child of Earl Clifford and Nellie Noreen Blair Styer just 355 days after his older brother Larry Earl was born.
Garry had worked in almost every garage in the valley. At the age of 5, he started working in his dad’s A & A Garage on Acme Street where he also dressed as Santa Claus at Christmas time. After a fan belt snipped off his index finger tip and put an end to his all star catcher career, he continued on becoming an Eagle Scout after his Grandpa “Sparky” Leland Hawkins and Uncle Butch Hawkins in Scout Troup 203 in Norwood Methodist Church. Attending separate schools together at WCJVS, Garry met his future wife, Cindy Lea Brooks daughter of Loring and Lucille Brooks of Waterford, OH.
His need for speed took him from demolition derby to dirt bike racing to stock car racing and flagging races.
In Watertown, Garry volunteered at the fire department, elementary school and with Little League baseball teams. Garry enjoyed umpire school at Harry Wendelstedt’s school and many years of umpiring with Jim Schaly and Burt Goddard. Garry loved to play cards and arrange tournaments at different venues. This led to an immense collection of sports cards filling almost all the home’s closets. He is known for his grilled cheese sandwiches at the January chili dinner at the church.
Garry was baptized for the remission of his sins in 1986 with his son Jamey at the Fifth Street Church of Christ in Beverly and is an active member of the Pinehurst Christian Church.
Garry and Cindy have 2 sons, Jamey Allen and Troy Eric (Roxanne) of Marietta. Garry is also survived by his siblings Dianne (Ric) Glen of Lubbock, TX, Suzanne (John) Holland of Ocala, FL, Larry (Cindy) Styer of Aberdeen, MD, Charlotte Banks of Louisville, KY and Terry (Daphne) Styer of Marietta; 5 grandchildren: Eric (Erica) Michaud, Bethanie Michaud (fiancé Andrew Miller), Miranda Michaud, Bishop Nunn, Johnathan Styer and 3 great grandchildren: Lyza, Remington and Everly and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday (Feb. 4) at 3:00 pm Pinehurst Christian Church, 20307 State Route 550, with interment following in East Lawn Memorial Park. Family will greet friends at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home on Sunday from 1 until 4 and before the service at Pinehurst Christian Church from 1 until 3. Messages of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.Lankfordfh.com.
Memorial contributions will be appreciated to the Gospel Mission Pantry, 309 Lancaster St., Marietta. Garry will be spending eternity on the back nine, golfing with his heavenly Father.
