William L. “Bill” Burton
William L. (Bill) Burton passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025. Born April 28, 1946, in Marietta to Daniel W. Burton and Jane M. Burton, Bill was a dedicated attorney, a proud United States Marine, and a veteran of the Vietnam War, He spent his life passionately advocating for justice and the rule of law. His commitment to his profession was unwavering and he was known for his sharp mind, integrity, and compassion.
Bill served his country with honor as a Marine during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication to his fellow soldiers were testament to his character and strength. The discipline and resilience he developed during this service carried over into his legal career, where he made significant contributions to the legal community, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a beloved family man. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Jennifer, daughter Lynlee (Ken), son Donald (Laura), grandchildren Mary and Noah , brother Daniel Burton (Vicki), sister Beverly Witman, five nieces and nephews, and thirteen grandnieces and nephews. Bill was also a mentor to many young attorneys, always eager to share his knowledge and experience.
In his personal life, Bill had a deep love of music and a passion for golf. He was an avid concert goer and constant advocate for his favorite band, Buffalo Wabs and the Price Hill Hustle. He usually had a golf club within reach and frequently gave impromptu – and oftentimes unsolicited – lessons in his office. He was known for always having a joke to share, a shoulder to cry on, and time to listen. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the positive impact he made on countless friends and clients.
A memorial service will be held on May 18, 2025, at Christ United Methodist Church, 301 Wooster Street, Marietta, Ohio. Visiting hours with the family will begin at 1:00PM, with service to follow at 2:00 PM. A private United States Marine Corps Honor Guard ceremony will follow.
