Phyllis Jean Brown Offenberger

Portrait of Phyllis Jean Brown Offenberger

Phyllis Jean Brown Offenberger, 78, of Marietta, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, at Marietta Heights Post Acute Care, surrounded by loving staff who cared for her, following long-term health challenges.

Born on October 28, 1946, in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, to Ruby Kathleen Earley and Pearley Leroy Brown, Phyllis lived a life defined by love, faith, and devotion to her family and community. A lifelong resident of Marietta, Phyllis was a pillar of strength and warmth. As a teenager, she worked diligently at Best’s Grocery, her family’s store, showcasing her strong work ethic. Later, she brought her creativity and charm to roles with Queens Way to Fashion and American Greetings. Throughout the years, she worked and volunteered in many capacities in the school system as her girls were attending various schools locally. A 50-year cancer survivor, Phyllis faced life’s challenges with remarkable resilience and grace.

On July 30, 1965, Phyllis married the love of her life, Phillip Offenberger. Their 60th wedding anniversary, celebrated in 2025 with a surprise gathering at Marietta Heights, was a testament to their enduring love, attended by family, friends, and devoted staff.

At age 20, Phyllis embraced her true calling as a mother, raising three daughters—Karol (Darren) Frodsham of Willis TX, Tracy (Gary Jr.) Gaughan of Marietta OH, and Amy (Barry) Ewell of Las Vegas NV—with boundless love and care. Her home was a haven of warmth, filled with cherished holiday traditions like baking Christmas cookies, decorating with her signature flair, and hosting joyful family gatherings. She loved her brothers and sisters-in-law and treasured get togethers throughout the years. Phyllis was a devoted “Mimi” to her nine grandchildren—Scot and Eric Frodsham, Thomas, Andrew, and Kyra Gaughan, and Alan, Kaylee, Andrea, and Phillip Ewell—whom she affectionately called her “little cherubs.” She delighted in hearing about their adventures and milestones, cheering them on with unwavering pride. She was an interested listener to the antics of her great grand puppies—Venus Frodsham, Mocha Gaughan, Remi Ewell and Timber Ewell. She was a steadfast homebody, however her love to make memories led her to travel adventures over the years. Her travel took her to cherished destinations, from beach vacations to mountain retreats, always with family by her side.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Phyllis served faithfully in callings such as Primary teacher, Sunday School instructor, and Relief Society educator, touching countless lives with her compassion and wisdom. Her faith guided her through life’s joys and trials. Phyllis is survived by her beloved husband, Phillip; her daughters and their spouses; her nine grandchildren; her brother, Richard Best; and her sister, Kathy Best King. She was preceded in death by her mom, Ruby Best, her beloved “daddy” Reginald Best and sisters, Brenda Best Arnold and Linda Brown Warren.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Shrivers Hospice and Marietta Heights Post Acute, including nurses, aides, social workers, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and kitchen staff, who became like family to us. Your compassionate care provided Phyllis with comfort and dignity in her final months, and your love for her was deeply felt. Viewing will be at McClure Lankford Funeral Home at 314 4th St. in Marietta on Tuesday October 7th from 5 to 8 pm. A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1503 Glendale Rd., Marietta, on Wednesday, October 8th, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Interment follows at Tunnel Cemetery.

Phyllis’ light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her. She was, and always will be, the most wonderful mom, wife, Mimi, and friend. She will be missed daily until we meet again.
